Entertainment in Porto Heli - what to do, where to go, how to amuse the kids, nightlife, shopping and more.
Browse around or skip straight to: Excursions, Food and Drink, Shopping, or Water Sports. The Noticeboard has details of local festivities throughout the year.
- Porto Heli is all about the water sports so info on beaches, boat hire, sailing, scuba diving, skiing and windsurfing are on my Water Sports page.
- Renting a mountain bike or motorbike from Afrodite in town means that you can explore the local area. Costa, Hinitsa, Maistraki and Vereroda beaches are good for swimming and snorkeling and have beach bars for midday snacks and cold drinks. You can also explore by sea, see Afros Rent a boat for details of small motorboats for hire.
- Walk around to the South side of the Porto Heli bay and see the ruins of ancient Halieis. There are remains both on land and in the shallows, parts of the baths and the olive press, outer walls, doorways and water cisterns. If you go in the early morning or evening it is cooler and the water is calm, from the acropolis there is a great view of the entire bay. To learn more about the history of Porto Heli, read Dr. Ken Citron's article on Ancient Halieis.
- Go on the KTEL bus to see Kranidi, a typical village virtually untouched by tourism about 6km away. This is where the public library and the Kranidi Folk Museum are located. The library is open Tuesdays & Wednesdays 12.00 - 19.00, Thursdays & Fridays 10.00 - 17.00 and on Saturdays 09.00 - 14.00. For more information call 27540 23461 or e-mail: bookranid@altecnet.gr. The Museum is open weekdays from 10.00 - 14.00 and 18.00 - 20.00, closed weekends and entrance is free. Call for more information on 27540 23561. Halfway back from Kranidi, stop off at the Pantanassa Monastery. Please dress appropriately (covered arms & legs), ask before taking photos and remember that a small contribution is customary if you wish to light a taper.
- Thursday is Ermioni Market day, all sorts of fresh, local produce and lots of cheap clothing and household goods. Ermioni is a lovely coastline drive of about 17km from Porto Heli and is worth a few hours of your time. You can get there by bus, flying dolphin or taxi. Most people find that a leisurely browse around the market followed by coffee or lunch in one of the many cafes or restaurants there and a stroll around the headland is the best way to see Ermioni.
- Spetses or Hydra islands are within easy reach by ferry, flying dolphin or catamaran or you can hire a water taxi for the day and cruise around the coastline, stopping where it takes your fancy. Monemvasia is worth a visit with Marines Tours on one of their scheduled trips or you can get there by flying dolphin. Porto Heli is a really convenient base camp for exploring Argolis too. Epidavros, Nafplion and Mycenae can be seen separately or on the same day, you can hire a car or pre-book a taxi to take you. There are performances in the ancient theatre of Epidavros during July and August which makes an excellent all day or evening excursion. For more details of places to visit, look on my Excursions page.
- Have an afternoon siesta and then stroll along the town quay between 7 and 9 to see and be seen, stopping occasionally for a coffee or an ice cream. Dine on souvlaki (kebabs) or seafood 'mezedes' washed down with an ouzo or two and then catch a show whilst sipping whisky and soda (soda is said to aid the digestive processes). Walk slowly back home along the beach and watch the sun come up. You're on holiday, so just relax and enjoy yourself!
